More than 30,000 visitors were attracted by the science festival “Highlights of Physics” in Wuppertal city center. The core of the festival - “From the Big Bang to the Universe” – was a five-day exhibition where FAIR was represented with a mechanical model of a linear accelerator.

Teams of visitors at the FAIR booth competed in winding the three cranks of the model to accelerate ceramic balls on the rail of the accelerator model – the time was taken using a photo sensor. After the sporting start the visitors generally started interesting discussions about nuclear and particle physics, and wanted to know why FAIR is being built.

At the festival’s opening show FAIR was also a topic when TV presenter and science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar interviewed Thomas Rachel, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The hosts of “Highlights of Physics” were the German Ministry of Education and Research, the German Association of Physicists (DPG) and the University of Wuppertal.
