Dense Nuclear Matter:

CBM-Meeting in Kolkata

More than 100 members of the FAIR scientific collaboration "Compressed Baryonic Matter" CBM) attended the 20th Collaboration Meeting at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) in Kolkata, India from 24-28th September 2012. The scientists discussed the progress in the development of detector systems and the preparations of the Technical Design Reports (TDRs).

Good news was reported regarding the funding of the CBM start version: The CBM institutes recently signed the CBM Pre-Construction Memorandum of Understanding, which lays down the intended contributions to the construction of the different detectors and systems of the experiment. Next year, in the framework of Resource Rewiew Board Meetings organized by the FAIR management, it is foreseen to negotiate a Construction Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU shall also be signed by ministries and funding agencies of the involved countries.

One of the highlights of the meeting was that Prof. Thirumalachari Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, addressed the participants along with Prof. Sibaji Raha (Bose Institute, Kolkata and Vice-Chair to the FAIR Council). Both underlined India's commitment to FAIR and CBM and in particular to the building of the CBM muon chambers.

About 450 physicists from 57 institutes in 12 countries work together for the construction of the huge CBM experimental setup. In the FAIR accelerators heavy atomic nuclei will be accelerated up to almost the speed of light. In the CBM experiment, such extremely accelerated atomic nuclei will collide with the atomic nuclei of a target foil, thereby producing a tiny, exploding fire ball. The conditions within this fire ball resemble those shortly after the big bang - or within one of the most extreme objects in the universe: a neutron star. With the help of these nuclear collisions CBM will investigate these extreme states of matter in order to investigate out e.g. the origin of the mass of the nucleons.. CBM is one of the four big experiment collaborations of the FAIR accelerator facility, which is being built in Darmstadt.
