FAIR - Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe GmbH (FAIR GmbH)
64291 Darmstadt / Germany
FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is located next to the premises of GSI (Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH) in Darmstadt, State of Hesse, Germany.
Germany with an area of more than 357 000 km² and a population of about 82 million people is located in the center of Europe and offers a favourable science infrastructure. Many of the resident research facilities of the Max-Planck-Association or the Fraunhofer-Association, the Forschungszentrum Jülich as well as the institutes at the various universities earn an excellent international reputation. With DESY and GSI Germany has two top class facilities for nuclear physics.
Hesse, one of 16 German federal states, is located in the center of Germany. A population of about 6 million people is more than the national average and Hesse is one of the most densely populated and economically strongest regions in Germany. The Rhein-Main-Area is one of Germany's most important urban areas and Hesse has an exemplary infrastructure with a dense motorway system, well planned inland waterways and last but not least the international airport Frankfurt Rhein/Main. The federal state government early identified the promotion of education, science and research as an important investment in the future and set the course accordingly. Special importance is attached to the exchange of knowledge between universities, research intitutes and the economy.
Darmstadt, located in the South of Hesse, is a medium sized town with about 140 000 inhabitants. The Technical University, two universities of applied science and the more than 30 research institutes make Darmstadt a scientific center of attraction and this justifies its official title as "city of science" ("Wissenschaftsstadt"). With EUMETSAT and the ESOC Darmstadt is the meteorological and aerospace center in Europe. Global going enterprises such as Merck or Degussa contribute to research and science as well as the variety of research institutes do.
With its already existing facility GSI is the perfect location for FAIR. Not only that FAIR makes a profit from the installations which will – in an upgraded form– serve as pre-accelerator and injector. Thanks to its competent staff in the fields of science, technics and administration GSI will also contribute with decades of experience, being essential for the realisation of FAIR.
